Deathmatches (DM's)

AoE DeathMatch Strategy | AoK DeathMatch Strategy

AoE DeathMatch Strategy

There is a lot to cover when referring to Death Matches. There are ways to get the most powerful units, strategies of how to set up a strong defense, how to get to the Iron Age quickly, which units to use when, which units are superior to others and so on. Well, I intend to cover as much of this as I can here on this very page. I don't excel in DM's but I do enjoy them just as much as any other game. I'll start off with what civilization to use and how to get the superior units early in the game. I'll then talk about which units to use, how to attack, and how to plan your attack based on your environment.

Civilizations

When playing a DM you need to consider what you want to do and how you want to play. You also need to consider how your opponent is going to play. I prefer a civilization that can get Centurians because the Centurians are easy to use and produce, cheap, and effective. I usually play with the Greeks when I am in a DM. They don't have much of a downfall in DeathMatches except that they cannot do much with their Stables, Barracks, and Archery Ranges. But, whatever they lose in Barracks, they make up for with their Academys. Any civilization that can build Academys is a good one to use in a DM. I just prefer the Greeks because they have an overall average ease of use. The Yamoto are also good since they can build Cataphracts, but their Academy units lack the speed of the Greeks. Cataphracts are also good units to use since they don't cost too much. They have a pretty good attack strength and can at least hinder your opponent while you build up mass Academy units. A good way to make your Academy Units even more effective is to research Toolworking in your Storage Pit. This will give them +2 Attack Strength and it will also do the same thing for your Stable and Barracks Units (Most of them anyway). Another unit to take into consideration is the Armored Elephant (The War Elephant if you don't have the Expansion Set). Some of the Better Civilizations incude: Greeks, Roman, Carthaginian, Macedonian, Phoenician, and Yamoto. These are mainly the civilizations that cannot Tool quickly but have a lot of power if they can survive to the Bronze and Iron Ages. You don't want to use a civilization like the Assyrians for a DM because their strong units focus on the Tool Age.

Iron Age

Any expierenced DM player knows that much of the fighting that takes place in the Iron Age. So the best way I know how to defeat the enemy is to get there first. Don't waste your time setting up an economy or defense early in the DM, do that later when you have a solid foot in the Iron Age. Your objective in the beginning is to get to the Iron Age as quickly as possible. Since you have high resources, just build two buildings from the Age and Advance. You may want to follow a building pattern similar to this.
    1 Villager
Storage Pit - Assign this task to the three villagers you start with
Granary - You should have your next villager by now, Assign this task to him and to the other guys to if you finish the Pit
    A D V A N C E - While you're advancing you should build a barracks
    2 Villagers
    Stables
    Archery Range
    A D V A N C E - While you're advancing you should build a Market
    Academy
    Temple or Govt. Center
    A D V A N C E - While you're doing this you should start considering a defense

Now, let me go over this step by step. Start off by building a villager. Make the other three guys build a Pit. They should finish at about the same time that your new villager will come out. Make them all build a Granary. AS SOON AS YOU FINISH ADVANCE, WASTE NO TIME. As you're advancing make all of them build a Barracks. You should have that finished before you Advance. The next part is optional. You don't have to get the 2 villagers but it is helpful. If you want the two villagers, you will have to build a house. You may want to do this while you're advancing instead of the Barracks. This can cost valuable time if not executed properly. You might also want to start researching things in your Storage Pit and Granary. I recommend the Tower and Tool Working for starters. This will start preparing you for later in the DM. I don't get them because they are not really needed. Now build your Stables and Archery Range at the same time. Assign each task two of your four villagers. AS SOON AS YOU HAVE FINISHED ADVANCE, WASTE NO TIME. Now build an Academy and Govt. Center at the same time. Just like before, assign each task to two villagers. Don't forget to be researching Technology. This is crucial to how far ahead you will get ahead of your opponent. AS SOON AS YOU FINISH ADVANCE, WASTE NO TIME. This is the last time you will have to Advance and you should have a small military built up and a tower or two is helpful. If you don't, you don't have to worry though. But if your villagers are ever not busy while you're advancing, have them setting up towers. And as soon as you get your military buildings up, build units in them, not a lot though, just enough to launch a small attack on your opponent. You don't have to follow this Build Order exactly, but I tried to make it as close to perfect as I could. If you can do all of this correctly and not waste any time, you should be in the Iron Age in about 10 minutes.

Units

If you can get to the Bronze and Iron Ages quickly, you can attack your opponents quickly and efficiently. Wipe him out with one stroke. This prevents from counter attacks after you've blown all your resources on your units. Have a good defens to fall back on, but it is a DM, you need to attack. I reccomend starting to set up towers and walls in the tool age with one villager. Now, the units you'll want to use are Elephants (all types), Academy units (All types, but upgrade A.S.A.P!), Archers, but use these to draw your opponent to one side of his forces and then attack with another. This is what archers are great for. And They can shoot over walls. Use them for a distraction. Attack with Power. That's the only way to win. A BIG consideration is water. If there is water, then use it to your advantage. Water can (and will) make you or break you. The secret to success in AoE is a combination of water and land units. A bit of luck helps too. But build up great water forces, and wipe out his docks so he can't counter attack. Then clear the coastline. Literally. This is very effective and cost your enemy valuable resources and time. Kill walls, *towers*, and units. If you see a mine of any type near the coastline, guard it. He'll send villagers over and then you need to slaughter them. Upgrade your units here as well. A Trireme isn't powerful, but 25 of them are! I use this tactic when I play some of the campaigns. Its helpful. The most important idea of a DeathMatch is to attack with power. Rush your Advances and Upgrades and attack with power and stun your opponent early in the game. This will give you time to build a strong defense, or build up your military. I reccomend both based on your situation.

AoK DeathMatch Strategy

Ok, Read all of the above info on the AoE strategy and it's duplicated except for the units of course. The strategy doesn't change much, but it does add quite a bit more. Like use a much stronger defense, and above all COUNTER ATTACK. If you don't do this, you're screwed, big time. It's the most important thing to remember in an AoK DeathMatch. A few general principles are if attacked by horsees, use Spearmen. If attacked by Siege Weapons, use Horses. When taking the plunge into enemy territory, attack heavily and swiftly. Max out to your population limit in your Unique Unit if its any good. You do however need to establish what you're taking, and then take something that can counter-attack what is weak to. I'll give you a minute to think through that. Ok, still can't get it? Example: If I take Horses, and I know that they are weak to Spearmen, I'll take a fleet of archers along because Spearmen are weak to archers. Archers are always a good defense for just about anything. Espically Seige Weapons. It's a good idea to surround your 15 Trebuchet's with 60 Archers. This combo works espically well with the Chinese and Britons, because of their Unique Units. It's awesome... you just have to try it out. I'll add more a bit later, but for now, tamper with this idea.
